Pathways to Success at Mercury College
Mercury College delivers education through The H.E.S.L.E.Y. Integrated Model. Preparation for Adulthood is embedded throughout the curriculum rather than being an additional pathway.
There are four pathways to success that our students are able to follow:
Access To Thrive study programme – This programme focuses on improving the quality-of-life opportunities and experiences for young people with the highest levels of support need, particularly students who have not been in education for some time. Achievement will be promoted in small steps, enabling students to communicate with others and be part of their community in college. Some students will be able to move on to the Thrive programme, but some students may benefit from the highly structured learning environment on a long-term basis.
Thrive study programme – This programme focuses on developing independence and community inclusion skills along with good health and wellbeing and group work experience in college for those students who need the most support and guidance to move into college life and on into adulthood.
Achieve study programme – This programme focuses on employment and independence skills, along with active engagement in healthy activities and a blend of group work experience both in college and in the community, where appropriate. This pathway is for students who are developing confidence and are ready to explore their local area, community learning and work-related opportunities.
Transform study programme – This programme focuses on transition into the community, increased independence and moving into supported living, along with independent work experience and active choices in promoting health and wellbeing. This pathway is suited to students who are ready to develop greater independence in community settings.
The Journey Plan
During initial assessments, we explore aspirations and support needs to ensure we can provide an appropriate and challenging study programme, including environmental and therapeutic needs. We continue to build on this understanding through the student’s personalised learning plan as they move through their learning journey with us.
In partnership with our associated specialist residential homes and supported living service, the college offers a unique package of learning and living opportunities to support opportunities for the development of transferable skills in the home setting.
Our aim is to support young people with learning disabilities and intensive specialist support needs to achieve their potential and prepare for the future. We want our students to leave us confident and happy, ready for their next steps and for even more success on their personal pathway.
What this pathway looks like is unique for each student and is carefully planned as part of their ‘Journey Plan’ throughout their college life. Our intention is that our students will be able to reintegrate into their own communities, where appropriate, and find their place in the world, living an active and fulfilling life closer to their families and circle of important people.
