Our colleagues bring a wide range of education, care and therapeutic experience to Mercury College, with specialist knowledge of supporting young people with learning disabilities and intensive specialist support needs.

Recruitment and training: Before joining us at Mercury College, people’s employment histories are thoroughly checked, references taken up and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks carried out. Our colleagues are carefully recruited, trained and supported to provide safe, consistent and person-centred support.
Colleagues complete a structured induction and ongoing learning programme, including role-specific training, coaching, mentoring and professional development. Managers also access leadership and management development to support effective practice.
One shared approach:
Our in-house clinical team works as part of The H.E.S.L.E.Y. Integrated Model for Mercury College which brings together specialist education, Positive Behaviour Support, consultant-led clinical leadership and multidisciplinary therapeutic input to help young people feel safe, access learning and make meaningful progress.
The Therapeutic Services Team (psychology, behaviour therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy) within Mercury College provides individual and group support for students, depending on what each young person needs. They work closely with colleagues both in the education team and associated care teams to identify and implement strategies to promote learning including:
• Photographs and symbols
• Makaton Signing
• Using accessible information or social stories
• Objects of reference
• Electronic approaches (such as iPads)
Safeguarding: As a specialist education provider, safeguarding is central to how we support students. We make sure students are listened to, concerns are acted upon, colleagues are trained and our systems are regularly reviewed in line with current guidance.
