New Service, New Opportunities - Ivy Lane
Hesley's newest service, Ivy Lane School & Ivy Close Children's Home is due to open in Wakefield during Spring 2021. We are looking to recruit a number of staff over the coming months to work within our multi-disciplinary team supporting children and young people who have a learning disability, autism and complex needs, including behaviours that challenge.

Our latest development offers child-centred education, care and support, including a full range of Therapeutic Services based on site, for young people aged 11 to 19 in an environment that complements their individual needs, capabilities and aspirations whilst allowing them the opportunity to progress and reach their full potential. Ivy Lane School
Ivy Lane School will provide high quality specialist education to young people with special educational needs. Class teams (including teachers, higher level teaching assistants and classroom support assistants) will work together closely to give each young person a broad and varied curriculum designed to give them every chance of success in their adult lives.
Onsite facilities will greatly enhance learning including: two multi-sensory rooms, ICT suite, art room, media room, music room, library, playground, sports hall, outdoor gym and several bespoke indoor and outdoor spaces designed to support learning and therapeutic interventions. Near to the school, the immediate area offers a rich variety of community environments to enhance and make real young people’s learning. Such opportunities include: local shops, supermarkets, city centre facilities, a full range of public transport, leisure centres, outdoor pursuits centres, theatres and museums.
Collaboration and team work will be vital parts of working with the school team. Collaboration with care colleagues to ensure consistency of care and developmental activities and close working with our Therapeutic Services Team will ensure our approach to care and education is strategic, specialist and is continually reviewed to ensure positive impact and outcomes for all of our young people.
To support this all staff will receive a detailed package of continuing professional development. Alongside ongoing supervision and support this will equip colleagues with the knowledge and skills required to excel in their jobs and will often play a vital part in preparing them for their future career development.
Ivy Close Care and Accommodation
Ivy Close Children's Home will provide high-quality, individualised accommodation and facilities for the young people who live there. The accommodation for the young people will be based upon a 'homely' residential model of small house groups. This will enable young people to learn critical life skills and develop meaningful social relationships. Home life provides the opportunity for creativity and learning through extended curriculum opportunities. The young people will be encouraged to personalise their own space and take part in house-based activities as well as accessing the facilities we have on site and the wider community.
Onsite facilities at the service will include a range of different learning and activity environments, classrooms and well-equipped workshops to complement the wide variety of available activities and to create positive learning opportunities through an extended curriculum. Within the grounds we will have our own facilities including an ICT suite, sports hall, sensory room, arts and crafts workshop, outdoor playground, dining room and common room, which will enhance the experiences and opportunities for young people.
As providers of care to young people with disabilities we have a duty to ensure that our safeguarding processes are robust and comprehensive. This includes ensuring that: young people are listened to and concerns acted upon; Hesley Group's staff teams are trained and competent in supporting young people; our management and reporting systems meet the standards required by law and are kept under review and up to date with current guidance.
As a service we are strongly committed to the safeguarding and well-being of all our young people and safeguarding young people is everyone's responsibility. Our recruitment process is thorough and before joining us we ensure that employment histories are thoroughly checked, references taken up and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks carried out. Once in post; ongoing training and school policies will provide high expectations for staff in regard to keeping our young people safe and well whilst in our care.
All new staff are required to attend and complete a relevant corporate and service-specific induction programme to their role. For care staff, these are aimed at meeting national legislation and standards such as the Level 3 Diploma in Children’s Residential Services. We also run a comprehensive leadership and management programme which ensures managers have the knowledge, skills and abilities to lead and manage effectively.
We recognise the importance of investing in our staff so they are equipped to do their role to the highest standard. To this end our workforce development department (Hesley People) provides and commissions a comprehensive programme of workforce development activities. To do this we use a blended learning approach which ranges from, delivery in the classroom for most programmes, e-learning where needed, on the job coaching and mentoring, apprenticeships, qualifications both vocational, academic and professional, accredited courses, open learning and further Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
Our Support Workers are responsible for providing the young people who use our services with high quality, safe and compassionate healthcare, care and physical and emotional support. They work as part of a team to maintain a stable, happy and caring environment that ensures the health, safety and welfare of the young person they support is an absolute priority.
