Clinical psychology team

Julia Mills
Assistant Psychologist (Clinical) at Hesley Village

I joined the Hesley Group in January 2016 and have since learned a lot about Autism and Learning Disability. In my current role, I work closely with the lead clinical psychologist for Hesley’s Adult services, who is also my supervisor. I work with my colleagues to complete and update all outcome measures which includes the assessment of behaviours that challenge and understanding the adaptive skills for each individual at Hesley Village. Additionally, and as part of the standard delivery of care, I complete functional behavioural work for individuals, Short-Term Assessment of Risk and Treatability clinical risk assessments and Positive Behavioural Support Plans, whilst also carrying my own clinical case load where more direct psychological input is required.

In my previous role as a Mental Health Support Worker on a female low secure psychiatric hospital, I worked with patients with varied mental health needs. These included schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder where individuals displayed high levels of behaviours that challenged. I was able to apply theory to practice through 1:1 talk time and group therapy sessions, whilst assessing patient’s environmental risks and how their behaviour changed from day to day. This was strengthened by the skills and clinical knowledge gained from my degree at Nottingham Trent University.

Other than psychology, another passion of mine is creative and abstract writing. It gives me great joy and satisfaction when I write but an even greater joy when I was published in an anthology after participating in an online poetry competition.

It is my hope to qualify as a Clinical Psychologist and to not only be able to expand on current research within the mental health field but also use the clinical knowledge and skills I have gained during my studies and to help one person at a time through any psychological need they may have.
