Specialist positive behavioural support teamEmma Burtenshaw
Trainee Behaviour Therapist at Low Laithes Village
My job at Low Laithes is to provide specialist assessment and intervention alongside the multi-disciplinary team to enhance the quality of life for the people we support. I have worked in a variety of services for people with Autism for several years and have most enjoyed working with adults with complex behavioural needs. I am currently working towards completing my master’s degree in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), which will enable me to qualify as a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA).
I started my career as a support worker whilst studying for my undergraduate degree in Psychology. I was fascinated by challenging behaviour and the motivation behind it, especially how the smallest intervention could reduce someone’s challenging behaviour and enhance their quality of life. The first time I followed the process from start to finish I knew it was something that I wanted to do. After working as a support worker and teaching assistant for a couple of years, I moved in to the psychology department and found my niche – ABA.
In my spare time, I am an avid music fan. I have a very eclectic music taste and have previously sung in bands/choirs, which is something that I am hoping to get back in to. In the near future I would like to qualify as a BCBA and continue to work with adults with complex needs. I would eventually like to conduct research in to staff resilience in complex needs services and explore how the principles of ABA can be used to support them.
